The name Cannon Square was chosen for the corporation as a tribute to the spirit that surrounds the physical location of a town square located in the Village of Stonington, Connecticut.
Along the northern side of the small park are the historic landmark sites of the Captain Gurdon Pendelton House, the Ocean Bank he founded, and the Customs House he built in the mid 1860's when the town and the Captain were renowned for their success as a major hub of the whaling industry.
Captain Pendelton is said to have
made a lively career as a whaler being given successive assignments as commander
of a whaling ship that took him around the world on three, 3 year voyages
in pursuit of oil that brought light to the lanterns of New England.
Upon his return from the sea, Captain Pendelton invested his considerable fortune in Ocean Bank and began funding new generations of merchant mariners.
